How to group data in Looker Studio?

Looker Studio recently added a new feature to create a custom group without writing any line of code. You can visually set custom labels on dimension values matching a specific condition. It can be helpful to group countries or campaign matching sets of conditions.

Here, we will show you how to use the features.

How do you create a custom group in Looker Studio?

From your report in edition mode, select a chart. In the Set-up column, add a new dimension and click on Add group.

Add a new Group in your Looker Studio report.

Then follow these steps:

  • In "Select field to group", select the field to use. You can choose a dimension or a metric; the conditions sets will adapt accordingly.
  • Name the new field that will be created.
  • Select the first Group name and set up the condition. Here
  • Add a new group if necessary.
  • Define a default value for all rows that do not match any conditions.

Here's a generic example:

I have a Country (Pays in the following screenshot) field, and I want to group them by continent; here's what I need to do.
